Rollers vs Bellville Willows

After the disappointment of the defeat to Robertson during the pre-season tour, the Rollers were desperate to get back to winning ways against Bellville – but it seems the weather gods transpired against us.

We looked in fine shape heading into the match, taking some blinding catches (except Louis) in the warm-up before the match.

We then won the toss and elected to bat under cloudy, but not too threatening skies. The lotto system dictated that Louis Pretorius and Hannes Carlson open the batting, but the former was back in the hut before too long – undone by a combination of the swinging two-piece ball and all the action the night before.

Casper looked in fine form for his 14 until a blinder of a catch saw him return to the dressing room, leaving the two Cooper brothers to face the deteriorating weather and confident bowlers.

In the end it was the weather that won – leaving the Rollers on 23/2 after 8 overs. A valiant attempt was made to get the covers on in time and save the game, and after a 30-minute storm the weather played along. However, a small hole in the covers meant it got wet on one of the pop-in creases, meaning an early start to the drinking and braaiing.

We also had time for a competitive game of touch rugby, where Ryan was sided with the three most unfit youngsters you can imagine. Suffice to say, the experience of Haas, Casper, Slang and Neville shown through in a comprehensive victory.

Next game is in two weeks’ time against Edgemead.
